My Grandfather is 93 and wrote an unpublished book 15 years ago about his experiences in the Pacific in WWII that I never read until now. It is the single most remarkable account of the Pacific war I have ever heard, and stretches through 6 horrific months on Guadalcanal, a murder trial where he is selected to defend a young Marine accused of murder, and an assignment to go, with only a translator, into Hiroshima and Nagasaki only ONE DAY after we bombed them, to report on the immediate effects of the bombs for the military. It also recounts his advising after the war to the military for the entire cold war, on the precise aftereffects of the atomic bomb. It's horrible, and humorously uplifting.
