Masterpiece, 10mn, USA, by Zach Madden
'Masterpiece' is a psychological thriller by 16-year old filmmaker Zach Madden. The film opens on a scene of an artist painting a canvas that cannot (yet) be seen by the audience. As the camera pulls back, the head of a victim is seen resting on a couch. As the scene shifts, the first glimpse is given of a new gallery being opened by long time friends Mike and Eric. When a mysterious painting by an unknown artist arrives at their gallery, the owners are perplexed but hang the eerie canvas. More art arrives, each piece a bit less abstract than the last. Eventually the last canvas reveals the shocking inspiration for the work. The mood of the film is enhanced by two musical pieces entitled ?Hope is Gone? and ?Anna? ?used by permission of Moby Gratis. The art in the film was used by special arrangement with Maryland artist Carolyn Roth. One piece was commissioned specifically for this film and was done by an up and coming Maryland artist, Tina Chen. Masterpiece was written, filmed, edited and produced entirely in Maryland. It was filmed on location at The Howard Community College art department gallery, and in the studio of the primary artist, Ms Roth.

MY GRANDFATHER IS A SUPERHERO, 97mn, USA, by Patrick Masson
My Grandfather is 93 and wrote an unpublished book 15 years ago about his experiences in the Pacific in WWII that I never read until now. It is the single most remarkable account of the Pacific war I have ever heard, and stretches through 6 horrific months on Guadalcanal, a murder trial where he is selected to defend a young Marine accused of murder, and an assignment to go, with only a translator, into Hiroshima and Nagasaki only ONE DAY after we bombed them, to report on the immediate effects of the bombs for the military. It also recounts his advising after the war to the military for the entire cold war, on the precise aftereffects of the atomic bomb. It's horrible, and humorously uplifting.
